Alex Pall And The Rise Of The Chainsmokers

INTERVIEW magazine’s Mathias Rosenzweig sat down with the Chainsmokers’s Andrew Taggart and Alex Pall in an informative Q&A for the magazine’s July publication. Mathias’s objective was to understand the unique approach that the two men have taken with their focus on the electronic dance genre. Many in this field will produce the sound material but often outsource other artists for vocals. Taggart and Pall’s efforts are to produce the music and the vocals, making their sound one-hundred percent original to their brand. They have worked with upcoming star HALSEY on their hit track CLOSER and spoke highly of the young artist’s talent. Other tracks focusing on the two men’s creation of their own identity are DON’T LET ME DOWN and ROSES.

While working in New York City as a DJ, Alex Pall’s passion for dance and electronic music was at the forefront of his daily agenda. He attended a local art gallery with his manager, who was an acquaintance of both Pall and Taggart at the time and would introduce them. They both to a liking to each other and immediately starting collaborating in Pall’s New York City apartment. Their mission as a duo is to bring their respective talents to the work and continue to reinvent themselves. Often in the electronic/dance genre, much of the music tends to replicate other beats and sounds from other artists. Taggart and Pall wanted to keep their fan base engaged with the music, but not represent other sound that is overplayed by the masses. This is why they are highly involved in the writing of the music as well as bringing in song writers to work with as well.

Alex Pall and Andrew Taggart’s mission is to continue to push themselves to the limits of their creative ability. The music is only one portion of the overall picture that they want to convey to their audience. Music videos, going on live tours, and constantly changing the theme of those performances will continue to be their main focus. They intend on staying in the business as long as possible and having the ability to come out with fresh ideas will guarantee a fan base that will keep coming back for years to come.

Chainsmokers Evolve Their Style

Three years ago the Chainsmokers, a DJ and production duo, came onto the EDM-pop music scene. Their music is described as a blend of pop, hip-hop, indie and dance. In 2018, their latest single, “Sick Boy” bore a much darker tone than usual. It may be different from their usual music, but their fans are loving it.

The Chainsmokers is made up of two DJs, Alex Pall and Andrew Taggart. Alex Pall studied at NYU, and Andrew Taggart studied at Syracuse University. When they started to work together in 2012, they began by covering bands. Eventually, they started to mix their own music, and partnered up with singers and other musicians. The Chainsmokers’ first breakthrough song, “#Selfie” topped charts all over the world. One song from their 2015 EP “Don’t Let Me Down” won a Grammy for Best Dance Recording. Pall and Taggart are happy with the new change in their tone, so are their fans.

Their new music is darker because it reflects what they, and their fans, are experiencing in day to day life. Taggart explains that their experiences play a lot into the music they make. He feels frustrated by watching their band become a caricature of what they really are. He observes young people every day stress over their popularity on Instagram and other social media sites. The kinds of stressors to be liked, followed and popular is reflected in their new music.

Pall believes in pushing the envelope in the music industry. He claims the band has always held high standards for themselves in making new and exciting changes in their music. Pall appreciates their new direction; they’re motivated by their craft, making the shows dynamic, creating great sound and making solid connections with their collaborations. They want to compose new music because that’s part of the magic, it’s constantly evolving to explore new ideas, concepts and styles. The Chainsmokers want their audience to relate and resonate with their music. So far the fans have been in agreement. Pushing the envelope and changing it up can be risky, but the rewards are well worth it.
