Chainsmokers Evolve Their Style

Three years ago the Chainsmokers, a DJ and production duo, came onto the EDM-pop music scene. Their music is described as a blend of pop, hip-hop, indie and dance. In 2018, their latest single, “Sick Boy” bore a much darker tone than usual. It may be different from their usual music, but their fans are loving it.

The Chainsmokers is made up of two DJs, Alex Pall and Andrew Taggart. Alex Pall studied at NYU, and Andrew Taggart studied at Syracuse University. When they started to work together in 2012, they began by covering bands. Eventually, they started to mix their own music, and partnered up with singers and other musicians. The Chainsmokers’ first breakthrough song, “#Selfie” topped charts all over the world. One song from their 2015 EP “Don’t Let Me Down” won a Grammy for Best Dance Recording. Their new music is darker because it reflects what they, and their fans, are experiencing in day to day life. Taggart explains that their experiences play a lot into the music they make. He feels frustrated by watching their band become a caricature of what they really are. He observes young people every day stress over their popularity on Instagram and other social media sites. The kinds of stressors to be liked, followed and popular is reflected in their new music.

Pall believes in pushing the envelope in the music industry. He claims the band has always held high standards for themselves in making new and exciting changes in their music. Pall appreciates their new direction; they’re motivated by their craft, making the shows dynamic, creating great sound and making solid connections with their collaborations. They want to compose new music because that’s part of the magic, it’s constantly evolving to explore new ideas, concepts and styles. Even the pro shop itself was redone recently and fans have expressed amazement over the ideas that McGalla and her staff have put into it, though they also had input from Steeler players and coaches.

Susan McGalla grew up in a rural community in eastern Ohio and may have gotten her love of football from her older brothers and her father who was a coach. She got her bachelor’s in business from Mount Union College and started her career working for the Joseph Horne department store in Pittsburgh. Her career at American Eagle started in 1994 as a local merchandising manager tasked with bringing in inventory to the women’s division, but she later moved into the corporate office and became Chief Merchandising Officer of the whole company. McGalla became a celebrated figure in Pittsburgh when she took the title of President of American Eagle and she was sometimes upheld as an icon for women breaking the norms in business, though she never came on-board with that narrative. But she was happy to see that American Eagle’s brand became more marketable to female customers as opposed to primarily males over the 16 years she served there.

Susan McGalla started serving in other executive positions in the years following leaving American Eagle including serving on the boards of HFF Inc. and also joining the Allegheny Conference on Community Development. She also founded P3 Executive Consulting and joined the Steelers’ business division not long after.
